Meet the Bactest Team
Rupert joined Bactest as CEO in 2017. Prior to Bactest, Rupert worked at Thames Water where he was Head of Innovation and Head of Business Retail, a £450m turnover business that was successfully sold in 2016. He has extensive international experience in water and wastewater consultancy, including roles as VP of Business Development in USA for Atkins, and Sector MD for Hyder in the Middle East. He has joined Bactest at an exciting time to take the business through its next phase of commercialisation and growth. Rupert graduated at Imperial College in Biochemistry and went on to complete an MSc in Environmental Engineering and an MBA.
Derek co-founded Bactest and has a history in Chemical Engineering, Immunology, Microbiology and a number of research and development projects including the scale-up of in-vitro techniques for monoclonal antibody production. Derek is responsible for BACTEST’s laboratory research strategy and also the development of a range of products for the waste water industry. In 1984 Derek joined Unilever’s medical products group (Unipath), setting up and managing the Antibody and Reagent Development function for approximately ten years. Derek has been involved in the design, development and manufacture of a range of immunoassays. As managing director and founder of Skybio for ten years, Derek has a proven track record in the manufacture, marketing and sales of “Life Science” products to include international distribution, import / export, accounting, and the basic support functions required to operate a commercial organisation in the research and diagnostics industry.
Director of Product Development
Toby is a specialist in early stage new hardware and software product development with a proven track record having brought 8 disruptive products to market in the IT and medical sectors within the last 10 years. Bridging the gap between the technical implementation and commercialisation of products he delivers the best solutions that meet the market need. With a core understanding of software development and enterprise level software architectures, Toby has worked with and delivered software applications ranging from small individual desktop applications through to multi-threaded, distributed n-tier systems giving him a broad spectrum of experience. He has strong technical and team leadership skills combined with excellent academic qualifications that include a First Class Degree (2003), a Masters in Software Development (2007) and a Masters in Mathematics (2016).
Dr Xuemei Li, PhD
Worldwide Science Officer
Xuemei is a materials scientist and expert in wastewater treatment with a PhD in physical organic chemistry, MSc and BE in chemical engineering and more than 18 years of experience in the development of nanomaterials, functional materials and their application in water treatment, Xuemei has authored more than 60 SCI indexed papers with an H-index of 20 and is experienced in material characterisation methods and mechanism understanding/modelling of biological/chemical process. Xuemei is currently responsible for the R&D work of Shepherd including improvement of Shepherd accuracy, providing technical support, preparing publications to support sales and developing the IP portfolio for Bactest.

Business Development Manager – Speedy Breedy
Stephanie graduated from the University of Adelaide, Australia with a Bachelor of Science (Molecular and Drug Design), and achieved first class honours. She has extensive experience working with Industrial, Pharmaceutical and Food & Beverage customers in Australia. She joins Bactest to add to our team of strong professionals.
Technical Manager - Shepherd
Experienced and highly flexible management professional with considerable technical expertise within the water treatment sector gained over a career dedicated to this industry. A thorough understanding of business / project delivery operations and enhancement gained from working with a variety of organisations and cultures, both client and contractors alike.
Science Officer - Speedy Breedy
Vidya is an Applied Microbiologist, qualified to M.Sc. level, with proven success in the Project Management of R&D, Translational and Industrial Microbiology. Vidya's experience covers drug discovery, healthcare products and clinical trials. At Bactest, she specialises in the formulation of ground-breaking media for use in our one-step Speedy Breedy rapid Microbiology device, as well as managing the Bactest laboratory.
Paul joined Bactest in 2017 moving from a commercial within Hach. Prior to this Paul held various commercial positions within Perkin Elmer, a life sciences instrumentation company. Paul has extensive experience in water, scientific and pharmaceutical sectors working in both technical and commercial roles over the past 20+ years. Working with clients Paul takes a consultative approach, offering insight and looking for ways to bring greater profits and operational efficiency by use of our products and solutions. Outside of his professional career Paul is a keen musician and fan of the arts. A passion for travel , coupled with a love of music has led to some very unique shows along the way.
Jessica has a BSc (Hons) Degree in Human Biology and is the first point of contact for customers contacting our Technical Support department.
Degree educated in the field of Biochemical Engineering with specific interests in the ways that scientific development can benefit engineering processes and aid solutions in an ever-changing society. With work experience in the field of design engineering for the development of waste water treatment plants in South America and in the field of process optimisation for the water industry in the UK.

Two Joined Bactest as Production Manager in 2017 after graduating from the University of Durham with a BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences. Two previously worked in Food & Pharmaceutical pathogen testing labs, that utilises conventional bacterial identification methods. Two moved to Bactest as he is excited by the work of a small innovative team in delivering efficiency and portable technological solutions in pathogen testing, especially for those who don’t have access to high-tech laboratory. Being a production manager, Two’s main responsibilities include preparing culture media, developing robust operating procedures and conducting quality-control analysis of products.
Providing admin, IT and marketing support to the office, Stuart has a background in Tactical Marketing for household technology brands and has a keen interest in Photography. He has been with Bactest since September 2017.
